Around 100 nominations have been submitted from 24 countries including countries outside Europe like United States, Australia, Syrian Arab Republic in the area of e-Accessibility and inclusive ICT, all of them of remarkable significance, that have been evaluated and 19 finalists have been selected for the four ACCESS-IT awards and 44 additional nominations have received the label of ACCESS-IT 2009 good practice label. All the finalists as well as the ones receiving the ACCESS-IT 2009 good practice label are included in a special electronic publication on ACCESS-IT 2009. In this respect, a wide range of people with disabilities and elderly and their communities (carers, family, rehabilitation experts, SEN professionals, AT experts, etc) from all around Europe can be informed on the awarded ICT services and products and how they can use them or take paradigms.

All finalists were rewarded at the ACCESS-IT 2009 event ceremony on the 23rd Sept, and many key players involved in the area of e-Accessibility and Assistive Technology attended this unique event.

BBC Logo ACCESS-IT@Home Winner

This award recognised an ICT based service that advances independent living for people with disabilities and elderly was awarded to BBC for their iPlayer solution.

ACCESS-IT@Work

This award recognised a service that advances the employability of people with disability and it was awarded to ECDL Hellas for their certification services for blind people.

This award recognised a free service that facilitates the creation by anyone of accessible electronic documents for blind people and was awarded to RoboBraille.

Selection process:

The selection process was based on four award criteria that assess the relevance for the aiming award, its impact, its affordability and openness, and its validation level. In addition to the four award winners, there were 15 finalists that also received a mini award as well as 44 nominations received the ACCESS-IT 2009 good practice label. The Award Ceremony included also a presentation on upcoming accessibility features given by Mr Matt Lambert and Mrs Sarah Foxall, Microsoft UK, as well as a key note speech and demonstration on ICT accessibility barriers and solutions given by Robin Christopherson from AbilityNet.
